It was a frustrating Sunday afternoon at Audi Field for DC Power FC as they tied Spokane Zephyr FC 1-1 on October 19. Despite dominating the field, Power found themselves trailing 0-1 entering stoppage time. Power controlled the play of the game with constant attacks and kept Zephyr on their heels, notching 17 shots and 10 corners. However, 7 offsides penalties stifled their aggressive approach and stopped chances before they could begin.

52 minutes in, a quick counter offensive found Zephyr deep into Power territory, and a stray slide tackle resulted in a penalty kick attempt. Zephyr’s Allison Cook found the back of the net on her penalty kick, turning the mood at Audi Field dour.

Power continued their aggressive offense by streaking up the sides of the field and crossing the ball into penalty box scrums. Nearing stoppage time, Power frantically attacked the penalty box again and again. Their chance finally came five minutes into stoppage time as Gianna Gourley sliced through the Zephyr defense, finding herself 1-on-1 with the goalie and striking the ball decisively into the goal.

Crowd roaring, Power continued their attack in the remaining minute with another shot on goal, but was unable to convert, leaving the match with just one point. Disappointed, Head Coach Omid Namazi remarked: “Another tie, which doesn’t help us in our pursuit of moving up the standings.” Power are ranked 6 out of 9 teams in the USL Super League. DC Power FC returns to Audi Field for their next home match on November 12 against Fort Lauderdale United FC.
