Loudoun United FC defeat Virginia Dream FC in US Open Cup

LEESBURG, VA — Loudoun United FC advances to the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup after defeating Virginia Dream FC 4-2 on April 2, 2025 at Segra Field.

The first half of the game remained scoreless despite strong chances from both teams. It wasn’t until the 42nd minute when United’s Riley Bidois notched a header in off of a corner by Pedro Santos.

After Bidois broke the scoring seal in the first half, the second half ramped up with goals from both teams. The Dream’s Akingbolahan Akinkoye scored the equalizer early in the second half at the 50th minute. This did not shake United, with Ben Mines scoring in the 59th minute, assisted by Zach Ryan, and returning the lead to the red-and-white.

Ryan increased United’s lead with one more goal in the 77th minute, with an assist from Mines. However, Dream continued to fight, which paid off when Nicolas Likulia scored another goal for the team at the 86th minute, making the scored 3-2.

United wasn’t finished yet, with Ryan scoring another goal off of a ball from Mines, and the duo locked a 4-2 win for Loudoun United. This win advances the team to round three of the U.S. Open Cup, where they will play against Louisville City FC on April 15, 2025.
